To keep our busy programme of events, activities and exhibitions running smoothly alongside the every day work of a museum we rely hugely on our amazing team of volunteers. Hertford Museum volunteers are diverse group and help us in many different ways.

Today is one of our regular volunteers meetings which are our chance to say thank you to all our volunteers and let them know about our plans and the work that is going on so we thought it was a good chance to tell you a little bit about what they do for us!

If you have taken part in any of our Family Activities then you will have met some of our wonderful family learning volunteers. All of our activities are supported by volunteers who hand out instructions, make sure you have enough pens and glue and glitter and hopefully encourage everyone to take part!

We also have a small group of volunteers who helped with our Saturday Teas (though you’ll also see them at some of our evening events- particularly if you come to our exhibition previews where they’re in charge of the wine!)

Another important group of volunteers are the leader of our Hidden Hertford Walks. These walks take place on Sundays and are entirely led by volunteers- the new programme will be out shortly and we’ll let you know here when it is!

Then we have a large team of Collections volunteers who do a huge variety of jobs from helping clean and care for our current collections to cataloguing any new objects that come into the museum. Volunteers help us with research on our collections and for some of our books and exhibitions, some of them even help write exhibition panels. All of our digital images have been scanned in by volunteers, a task that is still ongoing, and other volunteers are helping photograph objects.

And that’s not all, many of our volunteers kindly take on special jobs for us when we need help- transcribing recorded oral history interviews, delivering leaflets and posters and even helping us paint the temporary gallery between exhibitions!

We’ve got a very full team of volunteers at the moment which is wonderful but when we have any spaces for new volunteers we’ll let you know!

The Easter Holidays at Hertford Museum in numbers

Wednesday, April 10th, 2013

For today’s blog we thought we’d share some numbers about the Easter Holidays at Hertford Museum!

Since the start of the Easter Holidays we’ve had 1854 visitors!

daffodils

As it’s the holidays we’ve had family activities on and last week 166 children took part- don’t forget our activities are on tomorrow as well from 10.30- 3.30 if you haven’t been in yet!

12 wonderful volunteers have been running our family activities and another 13 volunteers working in other parts of the museum. Our volunteers help us with collections care, documentation, research and even maintenance sometimes. And speaking of maintenance we’ve had to change 10 lightbulbs since the holidays began!

Animal Crackers 31-7-12 009

Online we’ve had 11 new followers on twitter and 1 new like on facebook. Make sure to add us if you haven’t already because that’s where you’ll find the most up-to-date information (particularly when the website goes down unexpectedly as it did this week!)

Hidden Hertford

On Sunday our Hidden Hertford Walks continue with the Rivers of Hartham walk and we’ve got 9 people booked already so make sure you call us soon if you want a spot!

And for a final few numbers we’ve sold 4 copies of the Bengeo Stories book this week (though the total number is over 100!) and our Bengeo exhibition is on for another 11 weeks so you’ve still got time to see the exhibition and pick up a copy of the book! Our next exhibition will be celebrating 180 years of County Hospital and the one after that will be celebrating 100 years of Hertford Museum at 18 Bull Plain!

Arts Council England and the World of Wallace

Wednesday, March 27th, 2013

We’re thrilled to announce that Arts Council England have awarded us a grant of £59,000 from their Renaissance Strategic support fund towards our exciting World of Wallace project celebrating the centenary of Alfred Russel Wallace later this year! You can read their official announcement (and find out about the other recipients) on their website

ARW in 1869.Small_

We are absolutely delighted that Arts Council England have approved our application. The World of Wallace project will enable us to conserve and make accessible objects from our natural history collection and allow new audiences to engage with the legacy of Alfred Russel Wallace through objects, information and hands on interactives. Accredited museums with very limited resources will be able to share this high quality touring exhibition and resources for schools with their visitors and this funding ensures that all financial and logistical barriers removed. Thanks to the Arts Council, we will be able to share Wallace’s enormous contribution to Science and Geography with the rest of the country. (Sara Taylor- Curator)

Make sure you’re following us on twitter and facebook because we’ll be sharing more details of what’s to come over the next few months!

Another piece of good news we had this week was that our fantastic Front of House staff have been shortlisted for the Best Customer Service at the Museums and Heritage Awards! It’s going to cost £336 to send Julie & Holly to the awards which unfortunately we don’t have so we’re trying to raise the money in donations- if you can help PLEASE let us know!

Don’t forget our new exhibition Bengeo Stories is now open and, for the first time this year, there will also be cream teas, drinks and cakes served in the Andrews Room this Saturday 30th March from 11am – 4pm so we hope to see you soon.

Model Railway Day (and the end of China in the East)

Wednesday, March 13th, 2013

This is the last week of our China in the East exhibition so if you haven’t seen it yet, or want to come back for a closer look, then Saturday is your last chance!

And don’t forget if you know any knitters (or crocheters) that our Knit & Natter group has it’s March meeting tomorrow (Thursday) from 10:30-12:30 so do drop in!

This Saturday, 16th March, it’s Model Railway Day!

railway-day-18-08-10-005

tren_train_black_white_line_art_christmas_xmas_electronics_toy-555px If you haven’t visited us for a Model Railway Day before then you’re in for a treat. Our Railway days are always popular with lots of layouts to see, trails to do and a model train you can try driving yourself! In May Reg Harman, one of the organisers of our Model Railway days, ill be giving a talk on New England Railroad Travel and we’ll have the date of that and more details available from Saturday!

Next week we’ll be putting up the Bengeo Stories exhibition so hopefully we’ll have a sneak peek for you. The book to accompany the exhibition is being printed today as well so make sure you’re friends with us on facebook and/or twitter for details of the books release!

To celebrate the work that museums do with children and families the Telegraph has launched The 2013 Telegraph Family Friendly Museum Award and, if you have ever brought your children or grandchildren (or someone else’s children!) to the museum, we would like you to consider nominating us. The website explains how you can do that but what they really want is an email or letter telling them exactly why you love Hertford Museum!

Just in case you’ve forgotten what activities we have for families here are some pictures from the last 12 months!
