Along the Riverbank- May Half Term activities!

Wednesday, May 22nd, 2013

May Half Term is only a week away now so make sure you’ve picked up a copy of our newsletter, downloaded one from here or are keeping a close eye on our What’s On page!

Our theme for May Half Term is Along the Riverbank celebrating the four rivers that wind their way through the town- can you name them all without looking? I’ll put the answer at the bottom of this post.

Our family craft activities run from 10:30am- 3:30pm (last entry at 3:00pm) on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and are only £1.50 per child. Just drop in and if we can’t find space for you straight away then there’s plenty to do and see in the galleries or the museum garden.

Thank you to everyone who made our Museums at Night event so much fun, especially our musicians Zöe Phillips and Schrödinger’s Strings. There are some wonderful pictures on our facebook page and don’t worry if you couldn’t come this time- we’ll be taking part in this year’s Hertford Musical Mystery Tour in August so you’ve got another chance to enjoy some wonderful music over a glass of wine in the museum (hopefully in the garden this time!)

To celebrate the work that museums do with children and families the Telegraph has launched The 2013 Telegraph Family Friendly Museum Award and, if you have ever brought your children or grandchildren (or someone else’s children!) to the museum, we would like you to consider nominating us. The website explains how you can do that but what they really want is an email or letter telling them exactly why you love Hertford Museum!

Just in case you’ve forgotten what activities we have for families here are some pictures from the last 12 months!

China in the East

Wednesday, January 16th, 2013

When you come behind the scenes at a museum for the first time the huge number of objects in their collections can come as a shock. Most museums only have a small fraction of their full collections on display and so we’re always looking for ways to use or display objects that are normally hidden away.

China in the East is an exhibition that was designed to showcase the beautiful and fascinating Chinese collections of museums across the East of England. The project was part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad and it has brought together objects and knowledge from many different museums and used them to create a touring exhibition.

We are hosting this exhibition from today (16th January) until the 16th March so if you’re in Hertford pop in for a chance to see some beautiful objects and learn more about Chinese history and culture as well as listen to the stories of Chinese people who live in the East of England today.

As well as the exhibition itself we will also be celelbrating the Chinese New Year with a day of activities on Saturday 16th February 2013. You can come and celebrate Chinese New Year by taking part in food tasting, crafty activities and museum trails. At intervals during the day there will also be music from Miss Shu Jun who plays an instrument called guqin (a 7 stringed zither).

Then during Half Term our usual craft activities are all going to be around the theme of Chinese Customs so drop in on Tuesday 19th – Thursday 21st February between 10.30 am – 3.30 pm(last entry 3.00 pm).

As always all our activities are listed on our website and we send out reminders and additional information on facebook and twitter!

Autumn Leaves, an Art Exhibition and Stay & Play Saturdays

Wednesday, October 31st, 2012

I hope everyone’s having a great Half Term- it’s been really busy here at the museum with our Big Draw event and I’ve seen some beautiful drawings and sketches of our objects.

Tomorrow it’s the turn of our Celebration of Autumn activities. You can drop in and make montage of autumn leaves or a beautiful fireworks picture ready for Bonfire Night! Activities run from 10.30am- 3.30pm and are £1.50 per child.

Then on Friday it’s time for the Big Draw Exhibition!

All the beautiful drawings and paintings our visitors have done at the museum and at Courtyard Arts will be displayed in the River Room at the Hertford Theatre. Come along from 2.30- 4.00pm to see all the art works, have some refreshments and discover who the winners of Hertford’s Big Draw 2012 are!

And it doesn’t stop there! This Saturday is one of our Stay and Play Saturdays so there will be toys & games out in the Andrews Room along with a simple seasonal activity.

Plus this weekend is your last chance to see the Buttonhooks Exhibition so if you haven’t visited it already make sure you do.

Half Term activities- Hertford’s Big Draw

Wednesday, October 24th, 2012

This half term Hertford Museum, Courtyard Arts Centre and Hertford Theatre have teamed up again to celebrate The Big Draw with a week of FREE activities for families.

On Tuesday 30th and Wednesday 31st October you can visit Hertford Museum to draw some specially selected curious objects from the museum’s collection. Then take your work to Courtyard Arts where you will create a painting inspired by your artwork. Full instructions and directions between venues will be available on the days of the event.

Some of the 2011 Big Draw competition entries.

There will be a chance to enter your painting at either venue into a competition to win a family ticket to see this year’s Christmas pantomime ‘Dick Whittington’ at Hertford Theatre; the categories are under 8’s and over 8’s.

Last year’s prize winning entries (and runners up) on display at Hertford Theatre.

An exhibition of the paintings will be on display at Hertford Theatre from Friday 2nd November from 2.30 pm, where a private view and prize giving will be held with refreshments for all. The exhibition will also be open at the theatre on Saturday 3rd November between 10am and 6pm

A week of enquiries at Hertford Museum

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

I hope everyone’s enjoying Half Term. We’ve been very busy at the museum with our Roman Invasion!

But it isn’t just holiday activities that are keeping us busy, every week we receive questions, bookings, donations and all kinds of research enquiries so we thought this week we’d let you know some of our day-to-day enquiries!

This is just a selection of what’s been going on behind the scenes over the last week.

  • We ‘ve had lots of calls asking for details of our Roman activities and 85 children took part on our first day! There are lots of fantastic masks, drawings and mosaics being created.

  • A school have contacted our Learning Officer, Eleanor, about borrowing one of our Loans Boxes. These are full of objects that children can handle as well as helpful pictures and information for teachers to use.
  • A visitor was particularly interested in the Hertingfordbury Cowper School log books on display in our Hertingfordbury and the Greens exhibition and wants to come in and look through them to try and find some members of his family who lived in the village in the 1800s.
  • We’ve taken in a loan of paintings by Lionel Horsnell, a local artist, that we’re going to have on display in May.
  • Hudsons Dentists have been talking to us about some objects they’ve donated over the years that they may be borrowing back for an anniversary exhibition (the dentist’s chair in our main gallery came from them!)
  • Our volunteers are all learning how to use our new MODEs database and we’ve had a new volunteers start as well (unfortunately she’s the last person we’ll be able to take on for a while!)
  • We’ve been finalising details for our Museums at Night event this year, it’s going to be on the 19th of May and we’ll give you more details nearer the time!

  • We’ve had several enquiries about booking our Andrews Room from different groups.
  • Planning for the Hertford Carnival is starting- we’ll be open on the day and you might see the museum involved in other ways too!
  • CP Timber have kindly donated a laptop to us that they no longer need.
  • Our latest acquisition is a One Man Band! Tony Crowley was a local celebrity who performed on several TV shows (including Opportunity Knocks and Rainbow) and who held the world record for the longest continuous session of One Man Band-ing. He died last year and his family have kindly donated his instruments and several pictures to the museum.

It’s certainly been a busy time for our new curator, Sara Taylor, to start but we’re very glad she’s here!
