March 2014 (2)

Finally this week we have a quick warning- we’re having a new phone system installed in the museum this week. Our phone line should remain open throughout however it may need to be switched off for a short period at some stage (we’ll try and warn you on twitter & facebook if that happens). If you have a problem contacting us by phone then either wait 10 minutes and try again or email us at Thank you for your patience!

The Collections Trust (and our Christmas Model Railway Day)

Thursday, November 28th, 2013

Eagle eyed followers will have noticed that today is Thursday instead of our regular Wednesday blog, sorry!

Yesterday Sarah (our Assistant Curator) was at a Collections Trust conference about Digital Asset Management. The conference was looking at all of the digital assets (photographs, video, sound files, word documents, object records etc.) that museum’s care for now and how they can be best stored, looked after and used. It’s an issue that is becoming increasingly important for museums and we were very lucky to be given a free place thanks to funding from Arts Council England.

Museum's are very good at storing and caring for physical objects but we're still learning how best to store digital objects!

Hopefully over the next few years we will be finding better ways to make sure all of our “digital” collections are properly stored and working out how to share them with you- don’t forget you can already look through digital copies of most of our photographs on the Photograph Kiosk at the museum (and prints of these pictures make wonderful, personal Christmas presents!)

Yesterday was also our Cake Sale for the Philippines and we raised over £50 but there’s still money coming in so we’ll let you know the full total next week!

Don’t forget this weekend, Saturday 30th November, it’s our Christmas Model Railway Day. There will be festive train layouts for you to see (and maybe have a try yourself) from 10.30 am – 3.30 pm and it’s always a popular day so don’t miss out!

Hertford Carnival (and the last week of Bengeo Stories)

Wednesday, June 26th, 2013

It’s the last week of our Bengeo Stories exhibition so if you haven’t seen it already make sure you visit us by Saturday 29th June which is it’s last day! And don’t forget there is a new book about Bengeo out as well and there are still copies available.

Last weekend it was the Hertford Carnival and despite some rather depressing looking weather forecasts the week before the sun shone and the crowds came out! Our staff & volunteers arrived at the museum early to put our float together.

The float then set off to the Mead Lane Industrial Estate to get ready for the procession. The crowds on the route were huge and enthusiastic- if you gave us a wave or took one of our flyers then thank you! We didn’t win any of the prizes but there were some amazing entries.

Back at the museum we were keeping busy as well with a model railway day. We had nearly 600 people visit during the afternoon!

And it wasn’t just the model railway sets that people came for, we were also serving Tea & Cake in our garden which was welcomed by people who had stood watching the carnival and now had sore feet!

It’s the last Saturday of the month this weekend so there will be Teas in the Garden running again (and if the sun doesn’t last they’ll be in the Andrews Room so don’t miss out on our fabulous homemade cakes and scones!)

Hertford Carnival and Model Railway Day!

Wednesday, June 19th, 2013

The sun is out and it’s gloriously warm today, let’s hope it’s like this again on Sunday for the 2013 Hertford Carnival!

As you can see we’re working hard on our float with its Asterix theme so make sure you wave to us during the parade on Sunday. It starts at the Mead Lane Industrial Estate at 2pm and winds its way through town to finish at Hartham Common.

The Museum will be open specially on Sunday from 1pm- 4pm so come and see us before or after the parade (or during it if you want some peace and quiet!)

Just like last year there will be plenty to see as we’re combining the fun of carnival with a Model Railway Day!

Sunday will also be the start of the Bengeo Stories exhibition last week, it closes on the 29th June AND if that isn’t enough there will also be Teas in the Garden whilst we’re open!

Model Railway Day (and the end of China in the East)

Wednesday, March 13th, 2013

This is the last week of our China in the East exhibition so if you haven’t seen it yet, or want to come back for a closer look, then Saturday is your last chance!

And don’t forget if you know any knitters (or crocheters) that our Knit & Natter group has it’s March meeting tomorrow (Thursday) from 10:30-12:30 so do drop in!

This Saturday, 16th March, it’s Model Railway Day!

tren_train_black_white_line_art_christmas_xmas_electronics_toy-555px If you haven’t visited us for a Model Railway Day before then you’re in for a treat. Our Railway days are always popular with lots of layouts to see, trails to do and a model train you can try driving yourself! In May Reg Harman, one of the organisers of our Model Railway days, ill be giving a talk on New England Railroad Travel and we’ll have the date of that and more details available from Saturday!

Next week we’ll be putting up the Bengeo Stories exhibition so hopefully we’ll have a sneak peek for you. The book to accompany the exhibition is being printed today as well so make sure you’re friends with us on facebook and/or twitter for details of the books release!

Christmas Model Railway Day (and Christmas knitting)

Wednesday, December 5th, 2012

This is a knitted “paper” chain made by visitors to our first Hertford Museum Knit and Natter session! It’s on display in our Christmas gallery now so see if you can spot it next time you visit!

We were held this special knitting event to celebrate the arrival of the St Albans Cathedral Knitivity to the museum. This toddler sized nativity set was knitted entirely from wool by Ann Hudson and it will be in the museum from today until 8th December so make sure you visit in the next few days to see it (any children in nativity plays can take a picture with the woollen version of their character!)

On Saturday 8th December, while the Knitvity is still here, it’s time for our Christmas Model Railway Day! All your favourite train sets and displays will be at the museum and looking especially festive so visit us from 10:30am- 3.30pm to take part.

Entry is free (but we always welcome donations!)

Christmas comes to Hertford Museum

Wednesday, November 21st, 2012

It might only be November but Christmas is approaching fast and with an exhibition and lots of Christmas activities coming up we’re already getting in a festive mood here at the museum!

Our Christmas exhibition A History of Christmas: Past, Present and Future opened on Saturday and there are already some great suggestions from our visitors of what Christmas might be like in the future (plus some interesting guesses at the scents in our Smelly Box) so make sure you pop in and learn where some of your favourite Christmas traditions come from!

The weather isn’t very Christmas-y right now but whether it’s rainbing, snowing or even clear & sunny this Friday is going to be a great evening in town as the Christmas light’s are switched on! As usual there will be lots happening at the museum so if you’re in town pop in for a glass of mulled wine or take part in some of our activities:
Hertford Christmas Light Switch On event
Friday 23rd November 5pm- 8pm

  • Get stuck in to our FREE (and sparkly) drop in kids activities!

  • Soak up the atmosphere of our fantastic new Christmas exhibition to the festive sounds of Hertford St Andrew Church Choir
  • Enjoy a cup of mulled wine and a mince pie (small charge may apply)
  • Relax with some storytelling by Hertford Library in our gallery
  • Meet Blanche the Shetland pony, star of stage and screen, and her pantomime friends Cinderella & the Fairy Godmother!

If you’re busy this weekend don’t worry! There’s plenty coming up at the museum before Christmas!

From 5th-8th December the museum has some very special visitors- the St Albans Cathedral Knitivity! These nativity figures were knitted by local knitter Ann Hudson and they’re perfectly toddler sized so come and see them in Hertford before they continue their travels around the diocese (St Albans Diocese covers the whole of Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire so they might be popping up in all kinds of places)

While they’re at the museum we have two special activities. On Wednesday 5th December their creator Ann Hudson will be visiting for a special Knit & Natter session. Everyone’s welcome from seasoned knitters (bring your current project if you have one) to complete beginners and Ann will be on hand with help and advice. We’ll also have some of our toys and books out for any younger visitors who come as well.

Then on Saturday 8th December it’s time for our, always popular, Christmas Model Railway Day! Entry is FREE (though donations are welcome!) and there will be all your favourite festive railway layouts sprinkled with snow.

Hertford Carnival- Sunday 24th June 2012

Wednesday, June 20th, 2012

Is everyone ready for the Carnival on Sunday?

Hertford Museum is putting together a float for the Carnival procession. We’ve worked with lots of different groups and schools to make some incredible models of objects from our collection and they’re all finished now ready to be put together on Sunday morning.

Thank you to Richard Hale, Hollybush. Mill Mead, Bengeo Primary School, Hertford Heath Primary School, Selections Children’s Centre, Stapleford School and Morgans for all their help in putting the models together as well as to the fantastic volunteers at the museum!

It’s the first time there’s been a Carnival in Hertford for more than 10 years so we’ve dug out some pictures of previous carnivals from our collections to share with you:

If you want to know all the details about Carnival day then take a look at the Hertford Carnival website.

We’ll be taking part in the procession at 2pm, having a stall in the Castle Grounds all day AND the Museum itself will be open from 1pm-5pm with Afternoon Teas being served in the garden and a Model Railway Day as well!

The Polar Express

Did you see the Hertford Christmas lights being switched on last week? It’s was great to see so many people in town and at the museum! Our window is decorated with a 12 Days of Christmas theme (thank you Rebecca!) and our Christmas tree is decorated too so we’re all ready for our Christmas activities to begin!

This Saturday the museum is being taken over by Model Railway enthusiasts again, this time with a special Christmas theme! Come along from 10.30am-3.30pm and enjoy their festive displays!

For all our other Christmas activities see the “What’s On” page on the website or our Poster: Christmas at Hertford Museum

We’ll be open right up until 1pm on Christmas Eve and our shop is full of great presents, cards and last minute stocking fillers!
